Dear Recover America Friend,

I want to dedicate this newsletter to someone who was among our most faithful supporters…Ms. Janet Cook.

Psalm 116:15 reminds us, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of one His saints.” Our staff and friends of Recover America are grieving over the sudden and unexpected death of our dear sister and friend of over 20 years, Ms. Janet Cook. Everyone who met her knew her as a sweet, loving, and kind person. She impacted thousands of people as she served as my personal assistant over the years, treating people of the highest estate as well as the lowest station in life, the exact same.

She was a gentle soul, competent in her work and faithful in her service. Apart from my wife, Tommye, Janet was my greatest encourager, picking me up countless times when I returned from a meeting or speaking engagement that hadn’t met expectations. Just this past week when I was at my lowest ebb in quite some time after a friend whom I thought was going to step up big and help us fight this war to save our children, backed away and said, “NO,” Janet gently said to me: “God has never failed us, Dr. Scarborough!”

Those were the last words she spoke to me before she departed this world to receive her eternal rewards. “God has never failed us, Dr. Scarborough!” I could never make her stop referring to me as Dr. Scarborough. It was her way of showing me her deep respect. She is now an heiress of the King!

I will count as one of the most fortunate days of my life, the day she applied for the position of Executive Assistant to the President of Vision America, in 2002, a position she held until I gifted that ministry to another and moved to Washington DC in 2016. When Tommye and I returned to Texas in 2018 to establish a new ministry called Recover America, she stepped into that role once again and held it until I moved to Houston to open our new offices closer to our donors and the airport in 2021. She continued to serve on our staff part time until her untimely death, Friday night, March 3, 2023, at 11:00 PM.

Janet Cook leaves a void in our hearts and our work that can never be filled. We will miss her and will always remember her as a Sister, not as an employee. Tommye and I know that our sweet daughter, Kathryn, who preceded her in death, and who loved Janet as we all did, is now being looked after by one more member of our family who now resides in Heaven.

Two words best describe Janet Cook: “Faithful and Loyal.”
